The Masters

FYE

The Masters Tournament begins on April 11th. A total of 4 rounds will be held over the course of 4 consecutive days, with the winner declared on Sunday, April 14th.

Why is the Masters a big thing?

There are a lot of good reasons:

  • The Masters is an institution. This year marks the 88th anniversary of the Tournament

From Springfield, Missouri, Horton Smith won the first Augusta Invitation Tournament, as the Masters was first known, on March 22, 1934. He took home $1,500 in prize money

  • It is the first of the men’s 4 major PGA golf championship events of 2024 (followed by the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club (Louisville, KY - May 13-19), the U.S. Open at The Resort Pinehurst (NC - June 10-16) and the Open Championship (also known as the British Open) at Royal Troon Golf Club (Scotland - July 12-15)

West Palm Beach’s Brooks Koepka won the PGA Championship, Denver’s Wyndham Clark won last year’s U.S. Open, and Savannah’s Brian Harman won the Open Championship

  • This year, the prize pool is $18 million
  • And, of course, there’s the coveted ugly green jacket. Should the Masters Green Jacket receive a fashion remake?

Would you want to wear this iconic jacket? In case you’re wondering, the color is Pantone 342

  • Oh, yes, we forgot to mention the swath of controversy that has shrouded the Augusta National Golf Club over the years, the most grievous of which included refusing to allow Blacks and Women to join the ANGC for many, many, many years

TV Executive Ron Townsend became the first Black member of Augusta National in 1990

It took another 22 years for Condoleezza Rice (former U.S. Secretary of State) and billionaire Darla Moore (described as a cross between the Terminator and Kim Basinger with a wicked South Carolina drawl) to become the first female members of Augusta National in 2012

There are 19 different ways a golfer can qualify to play in the Masters. And during the Tournament, a bevy of rules must be followed – a far cry from the 13 rules that first established the game in Scotland in 1744. The most recent rules change involves assigning penalties to slow players in an effort to speed up the game.

Spaniard Jon Rahm won last year’s Masters for the first time. He also plays in the rival Saudi-financed LIV Golf Championship, which reportedly threw $556 million at him to play for the coffer-rich competing Tour. The rumor mill says the Saudi’s are vying to do the same in tennis.

Does this man (Jon Rahm) look like an athlete?

There are more than a dozen LIV Golf players in this year’s Masters field, including Rahm, Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson. Struggling 48 year old Tiger Woods has officially registered for the Tournament. Tickets were sold out long ago.

But … you can order an official Masters Hosting Kit delivered right to your door, so you can enjoy such delicacies as pimento cheese, egg salad, pork BBQ, Georgia pecan caramel popcorn and Masters branded cups, wax paper and coasters. The Classics Kit, with moon pies is sold out. As you feast on these goodies, perhaps you can dream of having a body just like Mr. Rahm.
