Celine Marie Claudette Dion is a French Canadian who grew up in Charlemagne, Quebec, a suburban town on Montreal’s north shore. The youngest of 14 children whose mother was pressured by a Roman Catholic priest to have more children when she wanted no more, Ms. Dion was her exhausted mother’s last reproductive act. Merci Maman Dion!
Back in the day, English (anglophone) and French (francophone) Quebeckers were at odds with each other – some still are today. Dion made headlines in 1990 when she refused to accept an award as Anglophone Artist of the Year, just as her English career was taking off. She objected because she did not identify as an anglophone, and suggested that the awarding body change the category, which they did the following year. It was awkwardly renamed: Artist With the Most Success in a Language Other Than French.
Fast-forward, I’m sure Celine Dion still considers herself to be Quebecoise, but the truth is that she is actually a francophone Quebecoise. I am an anglophone Quebecoise.
They say, “your health is your wealth”. Celine has had huge success and wealth, but not health … and has been absent from the music scene since 2019. The tabloids have been cruel, showing emaciated photographs of her as she suffers from an extremely rare autoimmune neurological disorder for which, sadly, there is no cure.
Celine Dion did not want to record another song for a movie. The now famous version of “My Heart Will Go On” in James Cameron’s blockbuster film, “Titanic”, is her reluctant demo track.
Dion is back in movie mode. This time, for the upcoming film “Love Again”, starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Sam Heughan. When journalist Rob (Heughan) is assigned to write a profile of the famous pop singer, he enlists Dion’s help in figuring out how to meet Mira (Chopra-Jones) in person … and win her heart.
The full movie soundtrack features 5 new Dion songs and will be available to listeners on May 12th. If you want to learn the new lead song so you can belt it out along with our beloved pop Diva, here you go.
Here’s a promo clip for the upcoming movie.
Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Sam Heughan fall in love via text message in their upcoming romantic comedy, “Love Again”, which will be released in North America on May 12th.
Celine Dion (as herself in the movie): Do you have a question for me?
Rob Burns (a journalist played by Sam Heughan): Yes, Ms. Dion. Do you really believe in all those things you sing?
Celine Dion: You obviously know nothing about it.
Rob Burns: What?
Celine Dion: Love.
Will the “Love Again” song track surpass Dion’s “Titanic” theme song? No, but it sure is great to hear Queen Celine’s voice again. We wish her much love and improved health.
