“The Marvels” will be released in North America on Friday, November 10th.
Part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), The Marvels builds upon the successful 6-part Ms. Marvel Disney+ series that first aired in June 2022.
Featuring the character Kamala Khan as Ms. Marvel, the Series refreshingly focuses on a 16-year-old Pakistani-American high school student from Jersey City. An aspiring artist, zealous gamer and writer, Khan’s life takes a supernatural turn when a mystical bangle bestows her with unique powers. Ms. Marvel provides a narrative that blends adolescence with gripping adventure.
Witness the mesmerizing ascent of Iman Vellani, a Canadian talent who, straight out of high school, unexpectedly clinched the role of Kamala Khan. Her remarkable on-screen debut in Ms. Marvel cements her prowess as a rising star.
“I really think it's important to find a passion and explore it. You don't have to have everything figured out at 16. You're not supposed to. And I think young people should hopefully be comforted by Kamala as a character and see that even a superhero doesn't have her life figured out.” (Iman Vellani’s advice for teens)
The Marvels follows 3 female superheroes: Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) and S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris). As their powers intertwine uncontrollably, the trio metamorphoses into “The Marvels”, their united front charged with the colossal task of preserving the universe.
This is not just another superhero film. It is a watershed moment for women and young girls of color who have long been craving representation on the big screen. The Marvels vows to fulfill this vital need, offering an unprecedented experience.
And in a groundbreaking stride, Nia DaCosta is the Film’s director – as well as Marvel’s youngest director and the first black woman to steer a Marvel production. You go girl!!!
With a reported budget of $275 million, let’s hope The Marvels delivers strong returns so the “middle-aged white dudes” continue to support the onscreen advancement of women and characters of color.
