The new Beyoncé film drops in North America on Friday, December 1st. Get ready to see the pop superstar perform hit songs in concert, overlaid with insights into the creative process behind the chart-topping, Grammy-winning album with which it shares its name.
The Renaissance World Tour, in support of Queen B’s 7th studio album, Renaissance (2022), began on May 10, in Stockholm, Sweden, and concluded on October 1st, in Kansas City, Missouri. It was an action-packed 144 days.
Live Nation has revealed that the superstar’s global Renaissance tour earned more than $579 million worldwide, with 2.7 million fans attending across 56 dates in 39 cities. If you do the math, that’s $10.3 million per show, or $3.4 million per hour (assuming a 3 hr. show length). In America, the Federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour.
Houstonian Beyoncé is a self-made high school drop out whose mother was a hairdresser and father a Xerox sales manager, who eventually quit his job to manage her career. Groomed for this role since she was a little girl, Beyoncé’s story is increasingly familiar: start young and stick with the program.
Beyoncé, now 42 years old, has been married to rapper, producer and entrepreneur Jay-Z (aka Shawn Corey Carter) since 2008 and has 3 children, Blue Ivy (2012) and twins Sir and Rumi (2017).
“I’m not bossy, I’m the boss.” (Beyoncé)
Comparisons to “Renaissance” will be made with Taylor Swift’s concert tour film, “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour”. With an estimated production cost of only $15 million and a direct relationship with movie theaters (i.e. no studio taking a cut), 50% of the $123 million gross will go directly into Swift’s pockets for a tidy profit of $46.5 million. Beyoncé has also cut out traditional film studios and gone directly to theaters. The times they are a-changin’ as Bob Dylan once famously said.
By the way, Beyoncé has earned 32 Grammy Awards – the most by any artist in history. Taylor Swift, who is 9 years her junior, has earned 12. But, thanks to The Eras Tour, Taylor’s personal net worth has surpassed $1 billion, whereas Beyoncé reportedly comes in at $540 million.
Named one of TIME’s most influential people of 2023, Beyoncé says: “I have nothing to prove to anyone at this point.” She’s right. And for that reason alone, we should all head to the movie theaters to hear what she’s got to say. I like what I see and hear so far. This highly successful Black woman with Creole and African American roots has much to teach us.
